Hybrid rocket fluid-system design

Oxidiser-system design for a 2 kN hybrid rocket engine, covering the tank, onboard filling arrangement and main oxidiser flow assembly.

CranSEDS / Race2Space Completed team project CV role period: Nov 2024–Aug 2025

Propulsion systems

Design an oxidiser fluid system as part of a wider propulsion team.

My personal design contribution was the fluid system for the 2 kN hybrid rocket engine: the oxidiser tank, onboard filling arrangement and main oxidiser flow assembly. I also developed CAD integration views and devised a nitrous-oxide filling system using a servo-actuated ball valve for remote operation.

System scope

Three connected design areas.

The CAD views show the main oxidiser assembly and its integration into the engine system. The original fluids bill of materials is available below.

01 / Tank

Oxidiser tank

Tank design within the hybrid-engine fluid system.

02 / Ground support

Onboard filling arrangement

Remote nitrous-oxide filling using a servo-actuated ball valve.

03 / Engine feed

Main oxidiser flow assembly

Fluid-system assembly design and CAD integration views.

Team integration and test

Successful team hot-fire campaign.

I supported campaign preparation, execution and hardware readiness; the team completed a successful hot-fire campaign at Protolaunch’s Westcott site.
